Getting a document notarized at your home or office takes four steps, and the visit itself usually takes only a few minutes.

1.  Have your document completely filled out . Don't sign it yet — most notarizations require you to sign in front of the notary.

How to get a document notarized at a hospital or nursing home

To get a document notarized at a hospital or nursing home, four things need to be in place before the notary arrives at the bedside.

1. Make sure the patient can sign. The signer must be conscious, aware of what they're signing, and able to communicate directly with the notary.
2. Have the document completely filled out. In some cases, the patient has to sign the document in front of the notary. In those cases, wait until the notary is present to witness the signature. 
3. Locate the patient's photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or military ID. If the ID is expired or isn't at the facility, mention it when you call — there are options, and the visit can be planned around it.
4. Contact a mobile notary, like Pass Notary & Weddings at 951-723-7254, with the facility name, the patient's name, and the room number, and set a time that works around visiting hours, the patient's alertness, and the notary's schedule.

How to get a document notarized at a jail

Notarizing a document for someone who is in custody works in four steps, and you don't have to handle any of it inside the jail yourself.

1. Have the document completely filled out. The inmate signs in front of the notary.
2. Contact a mobile notary, like Pass Notary & Weddings at 951-723-7254, with the inmate's name and booking number to schedule a time to go out to the jail. Note that a notary can visit an inmate the same day, they don't need to be scheduled the visit in advance. You also don't need to be present at the jail; I can go in on my own.
3. Once the appointment is scheduled, the next step is to get the documents to the notary, typically by email. 
4. Receive the completed document. After the notarization, we arrange pickup in Redlands or I mail the document to you.

Common examples include wills, living trusts, and deeds, plus powers of attorney, advance health care directives, loan documents, temporary guardianship forms, affidavits, authorization letters, and DMV paperwork. If your document is headed to another country, you may also need an apostille, which can be handles by an apostille agent. The document must be completely filled out and ready to be signed before the notary arrives. What kind of ID do I need for a notarization?

You need a current, government-issued photo ID — most often a California driver's license or ID card, a U.S. passport, or another acceptable government photo ID. The name on your ID needs to match, or reasonably match, the name on the document.
